Legalising Irish Documents for Qatar

If you are looking to use your Irish documents in Qatar, you will need to put them through a process known as Legalisation. We can take away all the hassle associated with this long-winded process for you. Whether you have an Irish degree or other qualification, a birth, marriage or death certificate, or any other document originating from Ireland, find out what’s involved so you avoid any costly errors.

How does it work?

Legalising a document issued in Ireland can be complex, especially as the requirements change depending on who you need to present it to, and exactly what type of document it is. Fortunately, most documents follow a similar pattern which we’ve broken down for you. There are however some situations where things are a little different, so if you want to make sure that you are fully informed, speak to one of our advisers and we’ll look at your individual circumstances free of charge.

Notarial Certification in Ireland

In some cases, your first step is to get your document certified by a notary public. To ensure your original document is kept safe, our notary will typically take a copy of your document, and will process that. They will certify it as a true copy of the original, and then start the legalisation.

Apostille Legalisation in Ireland

Irish documents that need to be used in Qatar must be first legalised in Ireland. During this process they will have an Apostille certificate attached and sealed to the reverse of the document. This is a white A5 piece of paper which confirms that the seal or signature used to certify the document is genuine. In Ireland this can only be handled by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Dublin.

Qatar Embassy Legalisation

Irish documents can generally be attested at the Qatar Embassy in either Ireland or the UK. The exception to this is that documents not written in English, and all commercial documents must be attested by the Qatar Embassy in Ireland. This is the final step that needs completing before heading to Qatar. An official Qatari-government sticker and seal is attached next to the Apostille during this stage. This attestation sticker confirms to the Qatari authorities that the document has gone through all the necessary steps in both Ireland and the UK.

MoFA Attestation (Qatar)

Once the document has reached Qatar, it requires a further attestation stamp by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha which validates that your document has been processed correctly thus far. Some employers make arrangements to handle this for you, so you should check whether this needs completing by you or not.

Translation from English into Arabic

In certain circumstances, your document may also require translation into Arabic. Again, your employer may handle this for you so best to check. If required, the whole document and its relevant stamps are translated from English into Arabic by a recognised certified translator. Once the translation has been done, then everything has been completed to make it fully useable within Qatar.

Legalisation Notes

  • Most common Irish documents, such as education certificates, police clearance certificates and birth, marriage or death certificates, do not require this initial certification and can processed directly with the DFA in Dublin.
  • For any Power of Attorney (PoA) to be attested, these must be signed in the presence of a DFA-registered solicitor to be valid. They cannot be witnessed by anyone else.
