Legalising New Zealand Documents for Qatar

If you need to use your New Zealand documents in Qatar, you will need to have them legalised (also known as 'attested'). This is a process to validate a document issued in one country for use in another one. Whether you have a New Zealand degree or other qualification, a birth, marriage or death certificate, or in fact any other personal or company document originating from New Zealand, find out below what’s involved so you avoid any costly errors.

How does it work?

Legalising a document issued in New Zealand can be complex, especially as the requirements change depending on who you need to present it to, and exactly what type of document it is. This is further compounded by the fact that there is no Qatar Embassy in New Zealand and so part of the process needs to take place in Australia. It’s harder still if you are no longer in New Zealand at all! Fortunately, most documents follow a similar pattern which we’ve broken down for you. There are however some situations where things are a little different, so if you want to make sure that you are fully informed, speak to one of our advisers and we’ll look at your individual circumstances free of charge.

Official Verification

In some cases, your first step is to get your document verified by one official body or another. In the case of an educational certificate, you will need to verify your qualification with the E-Quals system online and have the verification emailed directly to the Notary Public certifying your document. If the university is not in the E-Quals system, the original degree will be needed for the attestation process and a verification letter may be required on a case-by-case basis.
Pre-Legalisation

Certification by a New Zealand Notary Public

Before any document can be presented to the New Zealand government for legalisation, it must first be certified by a practicing Notary Public in New Zealand. In this stage, the Notary will check the legitimacy of the document(s) being presented to them. They will then attach a notarial cover sheet to certified copies of the original documents and add their official seal.

New Zealand Government Certification

Before documents can be presented to the Qatar Embassy, they need to have an Apostille certificate attached and sealed. This is a white A5 piece of paper that confirms the legitimacy of the seal or signature used to certify the document being processed. In New Zealand this can only be applied by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT).

Qatar Embassy Attestation

As there is no Qatar Embassy in New Zealand, the final step before it arrives in Qatar is for the document to be attested by the Qatar Embassy in Canberra, Australia. An official Qatar-government sticker and seal is attached alongside the certification by DFAT during this stage. This attestation sticker confirms to the Qatar authorities that the document has gone through all the necessary steps in New Zealand.

MoFA Attestation (Qatar)

Once the document has reached Qatar, it requires a further attestation stamp by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar which validates that your document has been processed correctly in both New Zealand and Australia. Some employers make arrangements to handle this for you, so you should check whether this needs completing by you or not.

Translation from English into Arabic

In certain circumstances, your document may also require translation into Arabic. Again, your employer may handle this for you so best to check. If required, the whole document and its relevant stamps are translated from English into Arabic by a recognised certified translator. Once the translation has been done, then everything has been completed to make it fully useable within Qatar.
