Legalising Documents from Spain for Qatar

Before you can use your Spanish documents in Qatar, you’ll need to have them legalised (also known as 'attested'). Whether it’s a degree qualification, a birth, marriage or death certificate, or any other Spanish personal or company document, let us handle it – we’ll take away all the hassle for you.

How does it work?

Legalising a document issued in Spain can be complicated, especially as the process differs depending on the type of document and who you’re presenting it to. Often the document may also need to be translated into English or Arabic. We’ve outlined below the usual process that documents need to go through, but please bear in mind that this can vary depending on what you need to legalise. Notarisation & Certification

Most documents start by needing to be notarised and certified. During this stage, a notary public will check the document is legitimate and sign & stamp it accordingly.
Initial Certification

Translation from Spanish to English

Any document written in Spanish will need to be translated into English. Then, the English translation is processed rather than the original, Spanish document. For qualifications and birth, marriage or death certificates that are already in English, this step is not required.

Apostille Legalisation in Spain

Before documents can be presented to the Qatar Embassy in Madrid, most need to have been legalised with a legalisation stamp. In Spain this is applied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, known locally as the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación (MAEUEC). In some cases, instead of an Apostille, documents will alternatively be processed with the signature of a national or regional court official, or be certified by the Chamber of Commerce.

Qatar Embassy Legalisation

The final step in Spain is to have the document stamped, known as attested, by the Qatar Embassy in Madrid. During this stage an official Qatar-government sticker and seal is applied to the document. This confirms to authorities in Qatar that the document has completed all the required legalisation steps in Spain.

MoFA Legalisation (Qatar)

Once the document has reached Qatar, it requires a further legalisation stamp by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar which validates that your document has been processed correctly in Spain. Some employers make arrangements to handle this for you, so you should check whether this needs completing by you or not.

Translation from English into Arabic

In certain circumstances, your document may also require translation into Arabic. Again, your employer may handle this for you so best to check. If required, the whole document and its relevant stamps are translated from English into Arabic by a recognised certified translator. Once the translation has been done, then everything has been completed to make it fully useable within Qatar.

Legalisation Notes

  • Whilst the original document is usually required, some educational certificates can be processed using a scanned copy. Please contact one of our consultants to check if this is the case for your document.
  • Educational documents in Spain require attestation from the Ministry of Education in order to be accepted by the Qatar Embassy, while Birth Certificates will need to verified by the Superior Court.
  • Please note that not all educational documents are accepted by the Spanish MOE. If the document will not be accepted by the MOE, unfortunately we will be unable to attest it for you.
